A professional.

I was talking to my mom this weekend, and she said it was nice, now that she has a terminal degree, to be treated as a professional - people listen and respect her opinion. I realize, as I think about it, that this is what I most look forward to upon graduation and finding my “real” library job- being treated as a professional. Sometimes I feel a little lost, a little trapped, and I maintain a hope that my degree will bring the ability to enact change and follow through on ideas.

I hope that when I am a boss (am I being presumptuous to say “when?”) that I will not make my employees feel that they can’t speak up. At the very least, I hope I can provide guidance as to when the best time to speak up is. I hope I am someone that people feel they can bring ideas to, realizing that not every idea can be implemented, but knowing fair consideration will be given. I hope that I am a boss that allows employees to take on challenges- even if that means trying to find a way to reduce their job tasks a bit to do so. It’s amazing how many 40 hour a week jobs can be done in 30- especially if there’s incentive!

I like my job, it’s the best I have… and yet I feel like there’s so much more I can do, will do someday. I suppose I’m a little too impatient.

Busy, Busy, Busy - and a new RSS feed

I have been busy lately. Besides homework (always fun) I put in a proposal with another LIS student to give a presentation at the College and University Section & Technical Services Round Table joint sprint meeting. I have also been planning my trip to the New Mexico Library Association/Mountain Plains Library Association Conference later this month and the ALA conference this summer. Work has been busy as well- I’m setting up so many meeting recently, and taking so many notes, that, unfortunately there is not much time to do much else.

I have made some changes to my website and still have more to make. The biggest change is that I have split my content into two blogs with two RSS feeds. If you are subscribing to this feed to read about library/LIS/school stuff, you’re in the right place and don’t need to do anything. If you’re one of my friends or family, you may be more interested in my “Journal” feed, located here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/KarinDalzielsJournal. The Journal itself is located here: http://nirak.net/journal/.

I hope to use a service to provide a combined feed in the future, but for now, if you want both, you’ll have to subscribe to both.

I posted a video of the kittens on my Journal and some pictures I took today (a much needed snow day.) Snow Day fun.
